Can triops be in the same tank as small 1-inch minnows? Will the minnows kill triop eggs or infants or attack?

Also, do minnows eat fairy shrimp? I know triops do.

I think you asked this same question twice. Triops and minnows cannot be kept together. It all depends on relative size and who attacks first that determines who survives this experiment. If there are any survivors, that is.

Minnows will find and eat the Triops and the Triops eggs of any size. The adult Triops may catch and eat one of the small minnows, but this will not stop the other minnows from trying to kill and eat the Triops.

Minnows eat fairy shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, Triops and anything else that could hatch out of a Triops kit. Cyclops can chew on your fish, so they are not a good choice as a live food.

Can I hatch Triops eggs without detritus?

Question by rotciv_gan: Can I hatch Triops eggs without detritus?
Hello, I’ve tried hatching a batch of triops eggs and used only distilled water, plenty of light and controlled temperature. 6 days have passed with no hatching so I’m assuming something went wrong. I read on some websites that very often Triops kits come with dry organic matter (usually leaves) that are supposed to provide baby triops with nutrition for the first few days. My kit did not supply this, so I used plain dry leaves from my garden. Didn’t work. Neither did my tank where I put fairy shrimp eggs (for triops food) and the exact same conditions as the triops hatching tank.

I started another tank for fairy shrimp eggs using only water and no dried leaves. Temperature, light and water quality were all highly controlled. Still no hatching after 4 days.

Where have I screwed up? Is it possible for ALL the eggs in my kit to be dead?

Fairy shrimp are freshwater and many people get them mixed up with brine shrimp which are salt water. You may have brine shrimp which are salt water which needs 1.5 table spoons per litre of water. I can’t find any fairy shrimp anywhere!

Triops eggs are very special as they can be dried out and when they are dry they stop developing. This is called diapause 1. They can last in this stop called suspended animation up to 7 years. When they are put back into water they are depleated or atmospheric air which triggers diapause 2 and begins hatching.
Sometimes the diapause 1 fails and it can’t get past that to diapause 2 which enables it to hatch so you will have to redry the eggs again and leave them dry for 2 weeks.
Eggs die when they are more than 7 years old but sometimes the eggs don’t get properly fertilised because triops are hermaphrodites. They have to fertilise their own eggs which could genetically weaken them but they do this in the wild and they are not human so this doesn’t really apply to them!
You can get some help from my Aussie friends at ‘littleaussieproducts.com/forum’ at the billabong bugs section! They are Aussie triops.

Tell me if I’m using too big words.

Q&A: Is there any water animals like triops that you can hatch easily from eggs?

Question by The Joker: Is there any water animals like triops that you can hatch easily from eggs?
I have just had triops and am now interested in other similar type of things that I can hatch for fun. I have heard of fairy shrimp but can not find them for sale anywhere online. I want something like that though.

Sea monkeys! Fun to watch. They sell them at Hobby Lobby, and Michael’s, I think. =) The cost for a simple set is about ten bucks. They get more expensive with more elaborate tanks.

Question by blushing angel: Where can I purchase fairy shrimp eggs wholesale or at a great price?

Fairy shrimp are fresh water and they don’t need aeration, so they are easier to hatch than brine shrimp aka sea monkeys.

I don’t want the bother of making salt water for Brine Shrimp. So Fairy Shrimp are good because I can just use plain old water.
